The Club Experience

What is it like to visit a Toastmasters Club? Find out in this video

What to expect on the night

Walking into a room full of speakers can feel daunting — but a Clapham Connectors meeting is far more relaxed than you might imagine. We’re a friendly bunch, and the whole evening is built around encouragement rather than pressure.

Meetings run for about two hours and follow a gentle structure. You’ll see a few prepared speeches, where members deliver talks they’ve been working on through the Toastmasters Pathways programme. There’s a lighter, faster section called Table Topics, where volunteers answer a surprise question with a one- to two-minute response on the spot — it’s good fun and often the highlight of the night. And throughout, speakers receive warm, constructive evaluations designed to help them improve, never to catch them out.

The most important thing to know: as a guest, you’re under no pressure to speak at all. Plenty of people come along simply to watch their first time, get a feel for the room, and see what it’s all about. You’re welcome to take part if you’d like to, or just sit back and enjoy — it’s entirely up to you.

Come as you are, bring a friend if it helps, and give it a try. We think you’ll be surprised how quickly the nerves fade.
